If you are seeking an after-school program that will bring social studies to life, then contact Future Voters of America! FVA is in the business of getting youth who traditionally don't care about civic life to form opinions on politics and to debate them weekly. Many teachers find our organization to be a kindred spirit in education, as we aim, as schools do, to empower young minds to think independently and rationally. Teachers can get involved in a variety of ways: More than three-dozen high schools and fifty high school teachers endorse Future Voters of America by bringing their social studies class to our Congress. You can, too! On the day of the Congress, we provide teachers with lunch and a university-level civics training class. Future Voters of America also hosts workshops on the Congress to build interest among the students before the big event. Teachers have lauded our presentations and our Congress from year to year. Teachers who can commit more time to Future Voters are able to endorse student-run Future Voters Clubs in their high schools. The clubs are designed to initiate thoughtful deliberation about aspects of their community or school that could be improved. More than just deliberation, the clubs are encouraged to take action based on their conversations. We also have a brand new Future Voters Curriculum available for teachers. The curriculum trains critical thinking skills on politics and teaches Senior high school students about the political process and the importance of civic engagement. We invite all teachers who are devoted to empowerment for their students to contact us and find out how we can meet that goal together. “I am so happy that you guys are doing what you are doing. I will always be here to help out.”Ms. Teresa LaSalle Social Studies Teacher, LaGuardia High School |
